Gas & Electric Meter Box Regulation
As per the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 it is a legal requirement of the home/property owner to ensure that a Gas Meter is property secured in a sealed meter box to allow any excess gas to be emitted into open air.
The Electricity Act 1989 also states that an outside electric meter should be properly covered with a lockable box with an accessible door which can only be accessed using a key.
Meter boxes must be located on the outside of a wall
Must be accessible from the front of the property
Must be kept secure and free from damage
Should not open onto a footpath or right of way
Can be placed next to a gas meter box, but not above or below it
Be between 500mm and 1000mm above finished ground level
